Breznik will celebrate in an unusual way the May holidays related to the Bulgarian alphabet, education and culture

The "Hidden Letters" project is visiting the city, which popularizes the unique letters of the Bulgarian alphabet.

The "Hidden letters" project of the "Read Sofia" foundation will visit Breznik from May 5 to 20, 2022. It combines poetry and typography in an urban environment to create new outdoor reading and meeting places.

The project includes original benches in the shape of Bulgarian letters. Each bench has a poem written specifically for the project.

The benches are dedicated to those letters of the Cyrillic alphabet that are not found written in this way in any other of the world's alphabets. Some of our letters are unknown to foreigners, but often we Bulgarians also miss the fact that we have unique written characters. Therefore, the "Hidden letters" project aims to reveal the richness of Bulgarian culture to a wider circle of people.

Cyrillic is used by over 300 million people in more than 10 countries. The letters of the Cyrillic alphabet that do not have a graphic analogue in the other alphabets are: Б, Д, Ж, З, И, Й, Ц, Ч, Ш, Ш, Э, ь, Ю, Я. Their popularization through the letter benches is usually accompanied from events in the field of culture and art.

Between 2019 and 2021, the project is visiting various cities around the world, including: Paris, Berlin, Rabat, Budapest, Edinburgh, Brussels and others. During their "tours" abroad, the letter benches present the history of the Cyrillic alphabet and become true ambassadors of Bulgarian poetry.

The last trip of the exposition brought the benches from Belgium to Breznik. The project will be presented in the city in connection with May 11 - the Day of St. St. Cyril and Methodius, and the upcoming May 24 - Day of the Bulgarian alphabet, education and culture.

The visitation of letters in Breznik aims to highlight the history of enlightenment in Breznik, as well as to recall works and poets associated with Breznik. The visit was realized with the financial support of "Asarel-Investment" EAD and with the institutional assistance of the Municipality of Breznik.

The letter benches will be located in front of the community center "Education-1870". The beginning of their stay under the windows of the library will be celebrated on May 5 with an unusual event in which local schools, the community center and the museum in Breznik participate. On May 20, the benches will travel to Sofia to welcome visitors and events in front of the Metropolitan Library.
